AI, without the hype

What is AI automation, really?

Letting computers do routine work that until recently needed a person: reading and sorting email, retyping data, drafting quotes, updating schedules.

AI is a tool, not a goal. I first look at where you lose time, and only then at whether AI is the right tool for it. Sometimes a simple integration without any AI is the better fix.

What do you use AI for, and what not?

For me AI is about how you work, not about what comes out. I use it to make processes faster, more consistent and more efficient: moving data, sorting, preparing, checking. That saves money and frees up time.

The content and the outcome always stay yours. Your knowledge, your tone, your decisions. A system may draft a reply or prepare a quote, but whatever leaves the building is and remains your own work.

AI that sends texts or answers into the world on its own, without anyone looking at them: I do not believe in that, and I do not build it.

Using AI is just asking ChatGPT a question, right? Statement

That is how almost everyone starts, and that is fine. But then you are using AI as a smarter search engine: you ask, copy the answer and still do the rest yourself. The same goes for generating code: handy, but it stays a loose tool waiting for you to walk over to it.

The real gain sits one level deeper: AI built into the workflow itself. A request comes in and the data is already checked and in your system. A booking gets paid and the confirmation, invoice and calendar entry follow by themselves. Your inbox is sorted before you have made coffee.

That is the difference: a question to ChatGPT helps you once, a well-built process helps you every time. Without having to think about it, without forgotten steps, always at the same quality. And here too: the process gets smarter, the content stays yours.

AI is a hype that will blow over. Statement

The hype around it will blow over, the technology will not. Compare it with the internet around 2000: a lot of noise disappeared, email and online shops stayed.

What stays is that computers now understand and produce language. For a business that means very concretely: less retyping, faster administration, better findability. You do not need to be a visionary for that, just someone who applies it calmly and carefully.

AI will replace my staff. Statement

AI replaces tasks, not people. The dull part of the work can be automated: data entry, sorting, standard emails, retyping figures. Customer contact, craftsmanship and decisions stay human work.

In practice I see this: the same team, fewer evening hours of admin, more time for the real work. That is what automation gives a small business.

Is my business too small for AI?

No, small is actually an advantage. You do not need an IT department or a months-long project: most of the gain sits in small, concrete steps that are built in a few hours.

Think of an inbox that sorts itself and drafts replies, or invoices that are created automatically after a booking. Especially for a sole trader or small team, every routine job you remove counts immediately.

Websites and costs

Why can a website be so much cheaper now than a few years ago?

Because building itself has become drastically faster. Writing code, testing and trying variants takes hours with AI tooling instead of weeks. Where a team used to be needed (designer, developer, tester), one builder now oversees the whole.

As a result, real custom work has become affordable at prices that used to buy you a standard template. This site, and every project in my portfolio, was built that way.

So where does the cost sit?

In the thinking and the care. Working out what your business really needs, the right structure and copy, integrations with your calendar or accounting software, testing on real phones, and keeping it all in good shape afterwards.

Execution has become cheap, attention is still handwork. That is why I work by the hour (€80) and give you an honest estimate up front: you see exactly where the time goes.

Fast, cheap or good: pick two. Statement

That old rule of thumb from project management held for software for years: you got two out of three, never all three. Fast and good became expensive, cheap and good became slow. You were always trading.

AI has broken that triangle open. Building itself, writing code, testing, trying variants, is now fast and cheap at the same time. Two points that used to get in each other's way now go together.

What remains is "good", and that is where I put the time: working out what you really need, building it carefully and testing it well. Fast and cheap have become the starting point. Good is where the difference is still made.

How can hosting be free? What is the catch?

There is no catch, just modern technology. A well-built business site is static these days: ready-made pages delivered through a global network (Cloudflare). Such platforms only start charging at very serious traffic, and an average business site stays well below that.

Large web shops and apps pay a lot, small sites ride along for free: that is the business model. You only pay for your domain name, roughly ten euros a year. Added bonus: such a site is faster and safer than a classic hosting package with a server that is always on. So the hosting itself costs you nothing; what you pay me monthly is maintenance, monitoring and small changes.

You no longer need a WordPress or Joomla specialist. Statement

Largely true, and it is worth saying. WordPress and Joomla once became popular because you could manage a website without a programmer. The downside is often a pile of plugins, licences, updates and extra maintenance that cost more and more time and money over the years.

Now that custom work has become far more affordable, that trade-off has changed for many business sites. You no longer depend on CMS, theme and plugin updates, and you get a website that contains only what you actually need. Copy, job openings or other content can still be managed yourself through a simple admin screen that matches exactly how you work. Restaurant Kaap Noord, for example, has its own environment where they manage vacancies and texts themselves.

The nuance still matters: if you have a large website with hundreds of pages, many editors or complex publishing workflows, a CMS can still be the right choice. For many small and medium-sized businesses, though, a traditional CMS is more a habit than a necessity.

All websites designed by AI look the same. Statement

That statement is true more often than not. Let an AI builder generate a website and you get what everyone gets: the same blocks, the same colours, the same tone. Technically fine, but unrecognisable. That is not an AI problem, it is a design problem: nobody is making choices.

A real visual identity still has to be designed. Colour, typography, imagery and the look that fits your business: those are human choices. For brand work I therefore like to team up with a real designer. AI then executes what has been conceived at great speed, but the conceiving stays human work. This site is proof of that: the style was deliberately designed, clean and monochrome with one accent colour, and then built with AI.

Copy is a different story: AI has become surprisingly good at writing. Structure, clear phrasing, findability in Google and AI answers: that goes fast and sharp. But my fixed rule applies there too: you decide the content and the tone, and nothing goes out without your eyes on it.

What does maintenance cost once my site or app is live?

A small fixed monthly fee, matched to what runs for you: hosting, domain, monitoring and small changes. New wishes or bigger changes are simply billed by the hour, without a contract or obligation.

And because everything sits in accounts in your name, you can leave or take over management yourself at any time. You are not tied to anything, including me.

What I can do for you in practice

Give some concrete examples of what you can automate.

A selection of what I build or have built for business owners:

  • Quotes that roll out of a request form automatically, including a follow-up email
  • A booking system with payment, confirmation emails and a calendar overview (built for a sailing school)
  • Holiday rental administration that keeps itself in sync with the booking platform (Verhuurmaatje)
  • A recruitment site where the owner manages vacancies and copy themselves (Kaap Noord)
  • An inbox that sorts incoming mail and drafts replies
  • Invoices and admin that are created automatically after a booking or job
Can I have a custom business application built?

Yes, that is where I come from. Before my AI work I spent years building custom FileMaker databases for business owners. I now do that work on the web: built faster, reachable anywhere and without licence costs.

Think of your own quoting and planning system that connects customers, calendar and invoices. Built precisely around your process, on your company's accounts, and transferable if you ever want someone else.

Can you also make my business easier to find in Google and in AI answers?

Yes. Classic findability (SEO) is about technology and copy: a fast site, the right structure and pages that answer what people search for. Findability in AI answers now comes on top: when someone asks ChatGPT who builds websites in your region, you want to be named.

That requires clear, factual content and the right technical signals. This FAQ page is itself an example: questions the way people really ask them, with a direct answer.

Practical

How does a project run and how fast can it go live?

Four steps: you call or email, we look without obligation at where the most time or frustration sits, you get a clear proposal with an honest estimate, and then I build it while you stay informed.

A website is often live within a few weeks, small automations sometimes within a week. It mostly depends on how quickly content and access to your systems are sorted.

Who owns the code, the site and the accounts?

You do. Everything is set up in accounts in your company's name: domain, hosting, email, payments. I work on it as an administrator, but you are and remain the owner.

If our collaboration ends, you take everything with you or hand it over to someone else. No vendor lock-in, no hassle.

What about GDPR and where is my data stored?

Privacy is built in from the start, not bolted on afterwards. Hosting runs through Cloudflare, with European services where possible, I place no unnecessary trackers and collect no more data than needed.

Where personal data is processed, for example in a booking system, I take care of the right data processing agreements and a fitting privacy statement.

Do you only work for businesses in the Netherlands?

No. I am based on Texel, an island in the north of the Netherlands, and work remotely for clients across Europe. Meetings go smoothly over video calls and most projects run entirely at a distance, in Dutch or English.

That is also the difference with a large agency: you have direct contact with the person who builds it.

Is your question not here?

Feel free to call, message or email. I will think along, no strings attached.
